Decompression Sickness

Also from: The Bends; Caisson Disease

Symptoms

Aching joints, rash covering body, difficulty breathing.

Treatment

Immediate oxygen, descent and immobilisation.

Diving

If scuba diving to a depth less than 10m (33') (no decompression stops), a person should not fly for 4 hrs. If diving to a greater depth with decompression stops, a person should not fly for 12 hrs, if diving for less than 4 hrs, otherwise for 48 hrs. Note that every 10m of depth is 1 atmosphere of pressure. As a general rule though:

  • dive to < 10m (33'): no flying for 12 hrs
  • dive to ≥ 10m (33'): no flying for 24 hrs
