Memory
Iconic memory
The visual part of the sensory store. Lasts about 0.5 - 1s.
Echoic memory
The auditory part of the sensory store. Lasts about 2 - 8s.
Long term memory
Improved by constant recall, vivid occurrence, but can be unreliable. There are 2 types.
- Semantic: knowledge of things learned (never lost).
- Episodic: knowledge of events, changes over time and influenced by expectation, affected by amnesia.
Short term (working) memory
Information is retained by rehearsal, and limited to 7 ± 2 unrelated items. Chunking increases retention time, otherwise lost in about 10 - 20s.
