National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics

Also from: NACA

The NACA was founded by US president Woodrow Wilson on March 3, 1915, and consisted of scientists and engineers with a strong interest in aviation. The intention was to establish a body that would advise the government in order that US aviation technology not be outpaced.

Alot of the early work of NACA involved wind tunnel testing of aerofoils. In 1917, a laboratory was opened at Langley Field, Virginia, for just this purpose. The results of much of the research and development work conducted was communicated to aircraft manufacturers and the public. NACA later also entered rocketry, and on October 1, 1957, NACA was converted into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
