Engine Starting
Engine #1 is started first because the blue hydraulic system engine driven pump is on #1, and the blue system supplies park brake pressure.
Normal start
- Switch the ENG START selector to IGN START.
- Switch on the ENG MASTER sw. The start valve opens.
- The fuel used is reset to zero.
- N3 increases. Oil pressure increases.
- At 25% < N3 < 30% an igniter is powered (igniters alternate on successive starts).
- N2 increases. Fuel flow increases.
- EGT increases. N1 increases.
- At N3 50% the start valve closes and ignition is switched off.
- Thrust limit mode changes from CLB to FLEX.
- At N3 62% it stabilises and the start sequence is finished.
- AVAIL is displayed on the engine EPR gauge for 9s or until thrust is applied.
- Set the ENG START selector to NORM.
- It is recommended to run the engines at or near idle for 3 minutes.
Manual start
The main difference to a normal start is that the pilot controls when fuel and ignition are applied to the engine. The FADEC provides passive monitoring only. It closes the start valve and switches off the ignition at 50% N3. If EGT limit is exceeded, the FADEC aborts the start. FCOM 3 details the procedure.
Manual start is not available after an EIU failure.
- Switch the ENG START selector to IGN START.
- Press the ENG MAN START pb sw. This opens the start valve.
- N3 increases. Oil pressure increases.
- At 25% N3, set the ENG MASTER sw to ON. Both igniters are on.
- The fuel used is reset to zero.
- N2 increases. Fuel flow increases.
- EGT increases. N1 increases.
- At N3 50% the start valve closes and ignition is switched off.
- Switch off the ENG MAN START pb.
- Thrust limit mode changes from CLB to FLEX.
- At N3 62% it stabilises and the start sequence is finished.
Auto relight
After a flame out on ground or in flight, both igniters will be automatically energised for 10s.
Quick relight
After a flame out, if the MASTER sw is selected OFF then ON within 30s and N3 is above 10%, the quick relight function opens the high pressure fuel valve energises both igniters.
Failures
ENG1(2) START FAULT | - the FADEC automatically shuts off the fuel, turns off the ignition, and closes the start valve - a new start is automatically launched |
