Flight Guidance
Also from: FG
Flight modes are annunciated on the FMA. A * indicates in capture mode. A list of all modes is here.
Lateral modes
NAV mode (managed) automatically engages, if armed, after takeoff at around 30'. When engaged, the lateral F-PLN is displayed as a solid green line on the ND. For NAV to be armed in flight, the aircraft track must be on an intercept with the active leg.
RWY mode provides lateral guidance during takeoff and initial climb to 30' if a LOC signal is available.
Nonprecision approach
Pushing the APPR pb on the FCU arms APP NAV (lateral) and FINAL (vertical). If NAV was already engaged, APPR NAV engages immediately. FINAL APP (vertical + lateral) engages when the aircraft intercepts the descent profile.
Precision approach
LAND will engage provided LOC and G/S modes are engaged.
Mode | Altitude (RA) | Notes |
LAND | 400' | can only be disengaged by a go around |
align sub-mode (degrab function) | 45' | not indicated to crew |
FLARE | 40' | |
(autoland) | 30' | occurs if the AP is engaged |
RETARD | 40' (engaged) 10' (callout) | available only during autoland |
SRS
Speed reference mode is engaged when the thrust is set to TOGA or MCT/FLEX, as long as the slats are extended, V2 is in the MDCU PERF TO page, and the aircraft has been on the ground for at least 30s. SRS is a vertical mode that maintains V2+10, or the higher of current speed (up to V2+15) and V2 after an engine failure. SRS mode is replaced by CLB at acceleration altitude.
SRS is also engaged for a go around when TOGA is selected, if the flaps lever is at least in position 1 and inflight or on ground less than 30s.
Thrust modes
TOGA LK | TOGA thrust is locked regardless of lever position |
Vertical modes
OP CLB, OP DES modes are selected modes. CLB, DES modes are managed.
CLB engages automatically at the acceleration altitude. When in CLB mode, ALT will be armed if no constraint exists, otherwise ALT is armed.
DES mode calculates the descent path initially in idle to the first constraint waypoint, and then several geometric segments to 1,000' with VAPP. ALT will be armed if the selected altitude is higher than the constraint, otherwise ALT is armed. If HDG or TRK is engaged, NAV managed is lost and DES reverts to V/S or FPA.
ALT mode indicates altitude hold, while ALT CRZ is altitude hold at the FG selected cruise altitude (on the MCDU).
