Engine Fire Protection
Also from: APU Fire Protection
Consists of (for each engine):
- 2 identical detection loops in parallel (A and B) (APU also has 2 loops)
- fire detection unit (FDU)
- 2 fire bottles (1 for APU)
- lights and switches
Pushing an engine FIRE pb sw:
- silences the aural warning
- arms the squibs
- closes LP fuel, hydraulic, bleed, and pack valves
- cuts off the FADEC power supply
- starts a countdown to allow the engine to slow down before releasing agent
Pushing the APU FIRE pb sw:
- shuts down the APU
- silences the aural warning
- arms the squib
- closes fuel and bleed valves (and closes the crossbleed valve)
- shuts off APU fuel pumps
- deactivates the APU generator
Fire test
APU
Check the FIRE pb sw is in and guarded, and the AGENT light is extinguished. Pressing the TEST button gives:
- APU FIRE pb sw illuminates red and the SQUIB and DISCH lights come on
- MASTER WARN light illuminates and a continuous repetitive chime sounds
- APU FIRE warning appears on the ECAM
- APU ECAM page is displayed
Also check that the APU fire extinguisher overpressure indication (red disc) is in place.
Engines
Pressing the TEST button gives:
- ENG 1(2) FIRE pb sw illuminates red and the SQUIB and DISCH lights come on
- MASTER WARN light illuminates and a continuous repetitive chime sounds
- ENG 1(2) FIRE warning appears on the ECAM
- FIRE lights on the engine ENG panel illuminate
- ENGINE ECAM page is displayed
Fire detection loops
The fire detection loops are gas filled tubes whose pressure changes with temperature. If the pressure increases, a fire indication is generated, whereas a drop in pressure indicates a fault. The fire detection loops feed into an FDU (there is 1 FDU per engine, including the APU).
Fire bottles
The bottles each have 1 squib with dual electrical supply, including the HOT bus. The extinguishing agent is Halon.
Failures
ENG 1(2) FIRE LOOP A(B) FAULT | - fire detection remains fully operational after a single loop fails |
ENG 1(2) FIRE DET FAULT | - both loops or the FDU have failed - if both loops break within 5s, a fire warning is triggered and does not extinguish |
