Flight Control Computers

Also from: PRIM; SEC

Receive inputs from the side sticks and the autopilot, and then manage the control surfaces. Control response is fed back to the flight control computers. Each control actuator on a control surface is controlled by a different computer, with one in active mode and the other in damping mode.

Preset limitations and instructions called laws are used.

Primary computers

There are 3 PRIM computers. Used for:

  • normal, alternate, direct control laws
  • speed brake and ground spoiler control
  • protection speed computation
  • rudder travel limit

Secondary computers

There are 2 SEC computers. Used for:

  • direct control laws
  • rudder trim, rudder travel limit

Failures

If a computer fails, the next computer of the same type takes over.

F/CTL SEC 1(2) FAULT- the other SEC automatically takes over
- the SEC can be recycled manually
- the actuator display on the F/CTL page becomes boxed in amber and switches to damping mode if it was in active mode
